Dr. Byrne’s practice is highly specialized, focusing exclusively on plastic surgery of the face, head and neck. He is certified to perform Facial Plastic Surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology, and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. His areas of expertise include aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty (nasal surgery), aesthetic surgery of the face such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), browlifts, and facelifts, as well as facial reconstruction.
Dr. Byrne completed medical school at the University of California, San Diego, and an internship in General Surgery at the University of San Francisco. He then completed a five year residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of California, San Diego. In Southern California he trained under several nationally recognized leaders in Facial Plastic Surgery, gaining expertise in facial cosmetic surgery, rhinoplasty, and reconstruction. This included a vast experience in the treatment of skin cancers of the face. He received numerous honors for his research and clinical work, including the Chairmans prize upon graduation. He was then awarded a fellowship position in the highly competitive Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship program administered by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS). He trained in Minnesota under the tutelage of Peter Hilger, MD (secretary of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) and his team of facial plastic surgeons. Here he honed his skills in the latest techniques in rhinoplasty, cosmetic surgery, and facial reconstruction including the repair of congenital facial deformities, and microvascular reconstruction. He was recruited in 2001 to Baltimore to become the Director of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (the #1 ranked department in the country per US News and World Report).
Dr. Byrne is involved in numerous scholarly activities, and has been an invited to give lectures and courses across the US and in many countries abroad. He is the author of numerous journal articles and textbook chapters on topics within facial plastic surgery. Dr. Byrne has a specific research interest in the treatment of facial paralysis, and is very involved in international humanitarian work. He is a member of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and the American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association. He sits on several committees of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
