Procedure Quick List

What can the CO2 resurfacing laser do for my fine lines, wrinkles, and scars?

The CO2 resurfacing laser is effective treatment for fine lines, wrinkles, and scars with a short recovery time and minimal post-treatment care. This laser may be used to treat:

  • fine “crow’s feet” around the eyes
  • lines around the mouth
  • acne scars
  • some surgical scars

How does the laser work?

The laser works by gently removing the uppermost layer of skin around the wrinkle or scar. When new skin regenerates, the area appears smoother. Depending on the type and depth of the wrinkle or scar treated, one or more treatments may be required.

How long will the results last?

The results of the laser resurfacing can last for 10 years, or even a lifetime.

What do I need to do before treatment?

For at least two weeks prior to your treatment, you will be asked to use retinoic acid cream on the area to be treated, each night before bed.

If you have taken Accutane within the past year, you should not undergo treatment with the CO2 laser.

What if I have a history of herpes simplex?

If you have a history of herpes simplex virus or cold sores, the doctor will prescribe anti-viral pills for several days before your treatment. Following the treatment you should continue to take the pills until they are finished.

Can I sun tan before my treatment?

Sun tanning, or going to a tanning bed prior to the procedure, should also be avoided as it may increase the chances of hyperpigmentation.

Is CO2 laser resurfacing painful?

The area of skin to be treated with the CO2 laser is locally anesthetized, so that you will be pain-free during the procedure. If you are having full face laser resurfacing, an anesthetist will give you a light general anesthetic so that you will be completely comfortable.

What should I expect after my laser treatment?

The treated area will initially be red with a superficial wound. Swelling around the treated area will occur. Swelling is especially marked in treatment around the eyes. In 24 to 48 hours, some crusting and mild drainage may occur.

How long will it take to heal?

Healing following laser resurfacing occurs gradually over approximately 1-2 weeks. The treated area may remain red for 1 to 3 months following laser resurfacing.

How do I care for the area while it is healing?

During the healing phase, care of the treated area is simple, but extremely important. An antibiotic ointment will be prescribed, and must be applied several times a day. If the area develops increased redness and itching, discontinue the ointment and contact  your doctor immediately.

Why do I need to apply the ointment?

The object of applying the ointment is to keep the treated areas moist, which aids in the healing process. You may wash the area gently with water but you should reapply the ointment after cleansing. The ointment should also be reapplied following the shower or bath.

If you have excess crusting, you may apply a cool compress (water with gauze or a clean cloth) for 10 minutes, several times daily.

How long must I wait before applying makeup to the treated area?

It is important that you do not apply makeup to the treated area until all the scaling and crusting has healed.

May I be exposed to the sun following the procedure?

Direct exposure to sunlight should be avoided following laser treatment. Daily use of a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher should continue indefinitely following the treatment, to avoid sun damage to the new skin. Do not attend a tanning salon.

When should I return to have my treated area re-evaluated?

A follow-up appointment should be made for 1 week following the treatment. Your doctor may wish to see you sooner depending on how much of your skin was treated with laser.
