What is Intense Pulsed Light?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPLTM) is technology in which light is converted to heat energy when it reaches the collagen in the skin. This is known as photorejuvenation. IPLTM treats the skin without disruption of the skin’s surface.

What is IPLTM used for?

IPLTM is used to treat sun-induced aging changes on the face, including brown pigmentation, age spots and broken blood vessels. It is also used to treat the facial changes of rosacea, including redness and broken blood vessels. IPLTM may be used for these changes on the hands, arms, neck and chest. It is safe, non-invasive and is tailored to the individual patient’s skin.

Is IPLTM painful?

When the pulses of light are applied to the skin, patients feel some stinging, similar in sensation to the snapping of a small rubber band against the skin. We therefore have our patients apply an anesthetic cream to the area being treated for 30 minutes prior to the procedure. This ensures patient comfort during the IPLTM treatment.

How is IPLTM performed?

After the patient has had the topical anesthetic cream on for 30 minutes, a cool gel is applied to the area being treated. Dark glasses are worn to protect the patient’s eyes from the light. With the patient in a comfortable, relaxed position, the IPLTM handpiece is gently applied to the skin and light pulses are applied.

How long is each treatment?

The procedure takes approximately 20-30 minutes, depending on which area is being treated.

How many treatments will I need?

In general, patients have a series of four to six treatments, approximately one month apart.

How will I look after each treatment?

Most patients experience some redness after the IPLTM procedure. This is usually mild and lasts from a few hours to one or two days. Patients may return to work or home without any disruption of their usual schedule and activities. IPLTM treatments cause “no down time” with gradual improvement and minimal side effects.

How do I take care of my skin after the IPLTM treatment?

It is important to protect your skin from the sun using a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. Wear a hat as well if you are going to spend any amount of time outdoors.

How long does the improvement in the skin last?

Patients experience long-term improvement in skin appearance and texture, with lightening of brown pigmentation and age spots and considerable improvement in broken blood vessels. This results in fresher, smoother-looking skin.
